Dr Caldwell grew up in Lake Macquarie attending Booragul High School. Following graduation from the University of Sydney in 1981 he spent his intern and resident years at RPAH, Sydney.

He completed his Orthopaedic training in 1991 and followed this with a Knee Fellowship with Dr Mervyn Cross and Dr Leo Pinczewski at the North Sydney Orthopaedic & Sports Medicine Centre (NSOSMC). This was followed by a Foot and Ankle Fellowship in Baltimore with Dr Mark Myerson.

Dr Caldwell returned to Sydney and joined the NSOSMC with a particular interest in knee reconstruction and patellofemoral disorders.

Over the next twenty years his work took him back to the Lake Macquarie area and he worked at the Toronto Private Hospital in conjunction with his Sydney practice.

On the closure of the Toronto Private Hospital he took up full time practice at the Lingard Private Hospital in Merewether in 2015.

Dr Caldwell is currently the President of the Australian Knee Society and was the Chairman of the Zimmer Education Committee for Knee Surgery for three years. He is involved with Orthopaedic Outreach. He is a lecturer for the Pacific Island Orthopaedic Association.

His surgical practice covers all aspect of knee surgery including arthroscopic surgery for meniscal tears, anterior cruciate ligament tears and patellofemoral dislocations.

He has extensive experience in total knee replacement and realignment surgery for osteoarthritis. He also performs hip replacements.
